What do I have for you this time? Today, we’re going to take a look at English collocations with sales. As always, I’ll give you some examples as we go through them.

So the first one
strong sales
Meaning: we have strong sales when we’ve got a good product, or you’ve had a lot of interest
Example:
Our company has seen strong sales of the new product since we launched it two weeks ago.
record sales
Meaning: levels that you had never previously achieved; new highs
Example:
My company launched a new product at the beginning of 2021, in February we saw record sales.
retail sales
Meaning: sales that take place in the shop, supermarket or some area where it sold directly to the customer
Example:
Retail sales are in a decline in 2021 because people are not going into shopping centres. They don’t want to come into contact with other people, so retail sales are in decline.

Meaning: those sales to other countries; products are leaving your country or going to other countries.
Example:
The state agency has announced that its clients recorded export sales of €15.23bn in 2019.
high-street sales
Meaning: ‘high street’ refers to the main street in towns or cities especially in the UK and Commonwealth; it refers to physical retail outlets across the country
Example:
If people don’t visit the shops and don’t spend money then high street sales are down, they reflect the mood of the population or the strength of that particular economy.

Now let’s look at verb collocations with ‘sales’.
sales go up
Meaning: sales increase
Example:
Sales go up across the country as a result of improved weather conditions. People go to the boutiques to buy the new range of summer clothing.
sales fall
or
sales drop down
Meaning: sales decrease to a lower level
Examples:
Sales fall in periods of poor economic activity.
Throughout the quarter, sales dropped down as a result of the bad weather.
The opposite is
sales soar
Meaning:: to increase dramatically; to go up like a rocket up into the sky
Example:
People just like to spend money, so sales continued to soar throughout the Christmas period.
As a result of the ending of a conflict, the sales soared.

sales slump
Meaning: to go down severely; to plummet
Example:
The sale of our new products slumped after the announcement that there had been some technical problem.
And then we could just have a general reference to
sales performance
Meaning: a review of the activity of a sales team or a company, in general, relative to previous years
Example:
Overall, our sales performance was lower than anticipated.
- We monitor the sales performance.
- We review the sales performance.
- We record the sales performance.

sales forecast
Meaning: to try and predict what is going to happen in sales
Example:
Sales forecast for this year is poor because of poor economic activity. So we’re not expecting improvement in our sales.
And finally,
the volume of sales
Meaning: quantity sold within a reporting period
Example:
The volume of sales of hand sanitisers at the beginning of this pandemic has gone through the roof. They were sold out immediately.
