Hi there. Welcome to Harry’s World of Words and Phrases and English in a Minute.
We’re now going to look at Phrasal Verbs using the verb ‘to work’ and the prepositions OUT, OFF, UP and ON. So we’ll take them one at a time.
Let’s first of all take
work out
I am going to work out a solution to this problem.
So you’re working on a crossword puzzle, you can work out, you can find the solution.
work off something
Meaning: to get rid of something unpleasant by energetic physical activity
Examples:
We had a very good Christmas and New Year, we put on a few extra kilos so we want to work off that weight.
We want to go out for a run and work it off.

Meaning: to get ready for something or prepare for something
So we can say:
‘Let’s go outside and have a good walk for 5 or 7 kilometres and we’ll work up an appetite.’
Meaning we’ll become hungry so when we go home we can have a nice meal.
And then finally
work on
To work on something.
I am going to work on that project all weekend cause I really need to finish it by Monday.

12 Phrasal Verbs with Work
work off
Meaning: to repay a debt by working without pay
Example:
It took a year to work off what she owed the company.
work on someone
Meaning: to try to influence someone by constantly persuading them
Example:
My half brother has a house in the south of France. I’ll work on him to let us have it for a week in May.
work up to something
Meaning: to develop into something
Example:
The movie works up to a big revelation that doesn’t surprise anyone.
work around
Meaning: to organise your activities to accomplish or achieve something in such a way as to avoid some difficulty or problem
Example:
The following procedure helps to work around this issue. However, a permanent fix is yet to be released.
work at something
Meaning: to make an effort to achieve or improve something
Example:
If she works at improving her business English skills, she could get that managerial position she is looking for.
work someone over
Meaning: to attack and injure someone severely
Example:
The police worked him over pretty bad before they took him into the station.

Meaning: to exercise in order to improve the appearance of your body
Example:
I started working out regularly when I was 17.
