Often, we get stuck with using the same word time and time again. And really, when I’m trying to teach my students, I try to get them to use different words.
So there’s no repeat, repeat, repeat. This can be a little bit boring but also shows a lack of development of vocabulary, so it’s really important to pick up and learn synonyms and new vocabulary words in English.
This is particularly important if you are preparing for English proficiency exams (IELTS, CAE, TOEFL) and want to impress the inspector that you have the ability to use other words.
For example, you go on a holiday.
Oh, it was a beautiful holiday.
Or
The view was beautiful.
The meal was beautiful.
The swimming pool was beautiful.
So gets a little bit boring. What alternative words can you use for “beautiful?”

Luckily, when we use the word beautiful, we can use it with a thing or with a person. So we can use it with a thing – a tree, a view as beautiful.
We can also refer to a person – he or she as beautiful. Okay.
So what alternatives can we use?
Well, we can use words like
gorgeous
view/day/weather/boyfriend/dress/beach etc
So how was the view from your balcony?
Ah, it was gorgeous. Yeah, you could see the sunset in the distance. Really really gorgeous.
Did you see the dress that she was wearing?
Yeah, it was a gorgeous, really beautiful colour and it really looked well on her.
glorious
day/weather/sky/view
The day we arrived, the weather was glorious. It was not too hot. It was a pleasure to sit beside the pool.
adorable
baby/puppy/kitten
The new baby is adorable, I can run away with her.
Sam’s new puppy is adorable. I wish I had a puppy.
wonderful
pool/view
Now, wonderful we’d normally use with a thing.
So the view was wonderful, and the swimming pool in the hotel was wonderful.
It was a 25-meter pool. It was crystal-clear water. It wasn’t too busy. It was really wonderful.
It was great to get away from the city. We had a really wonderful weekend. A second honeymoon.
Other Words for Beautiful
breathtaking
view/scenery/drive
I was standing on the top of the mountain looking down, the view was breathtaking.
Looking at Niagara Falls in America is breathtaking.
We can use
stunning
view/woman/outfit
Again here we can use this both with what (the thing) and who (the person).
So how was the view off the balcony?
Ah, it was absolutely stunning. You couldn’t ask for a better view. Looking out over the
sea looking at the wonderful mountains and background really really quite stunning.
And how did she look on her wedding day?
Oh, she was stunning. She had the most beautiful dress really nice cream colour. Really really classic.
Okay. So another word that we can use is
good-looking
That somebody who is beautiful can be very good-looking.
They can also be
attractive
person/house/location
We wouldn’t refer to a view for example as good-looking.
We refer to a person as good-looking.
- a good-looking man
- a good-looking woman
- a good-looking family
Yes, we could also refer to
- an attractive woman
- an attractive man
- an attractive-looking family
The hotel was situated in an attractive location near the fjord, with a great view of the Lyngen Alps.
The house was really attractive, nicely furnished with plenty of space for us all.

splendid
view/table/villa
Our room had a splendid view.
time/service/idea (really good, excellent)
We had a splendid time in the hotel. Everything was wonderful. The service was really really good. The food was excellent.
exquisite /ɪkˈskwɪzət/
Meaning: we’re talking about amazing or almost perfection
We couldn’t complain about anything. The presentation, the taste, and the choice of wine… It was exquisite.
majestic
performance/building/scenery
The performance is absolutely majestic, you couldn’t fault it in any way. Well rehearsed and practised.
The new building is majestic. The architect has designed this to really fit in with the surroundings of the city.
enchanting
The village is enchanting. It is full of cute, quaint little cottages. The street is spotlessly clean.
So here are my other words for beautiful. Words that we can use instead of “beautiful” so that we don’t have to use the same adjective all of the time.
But be careful with all synonyms. There are times when you can use them, and times when you cannot.
So here they are,
- glorious
- adorable
- stunning
- splendid
- breathtaking
- gorgeous
- good-looking
- wonderful
- attractive
- exquisite
- majestic
- enchanting
