12 Other Words for Beautiful

Often, we get stuck with using the same word time and time again. And really, when I’m trying to teach my students, I try to get them to use different words.

So there’s no repeat, repeat, repeat. This can be a little bit boring but also shows a lack of development of vocabulary, so it’s really important to pick up and learn synonyms and new vocabulary words in English.

This is particularly important if you are preparing for English proficiency exams (IELTS, CAE, TOEFL) and want to impress the inspector that you have the ability to use other words.

For example, you go on a holiday.

Oh, it was a beautiful holiday.

Or

The view was beautiful.

The meal was beautiful.

The swimming pool was beautiful.

So gets a little bit boring. What alternative words can you use for “beautiful?”

Luckily, when we use the word beautiful, we can use it with a thing or with a person. So we can use it with a thing – a tree, a view as beautiful.

We can also refer to a person – he or she as beautiful. Okay.

So what alternatives can we use?

Well, we can use words like

gorgeous

view/day/weather/boyfriend/dress/beach etc

So how was the view from your balcony?

Ah, it was gorgeous. Yeah, you could see the sunset in the distance. Really really gorgeous.

Did you see the dress that she was wearing?

Yeah, it was a gorgeous, really beautiful colour and it really looked well on her.

glorious

day/weather/sky/view

The day we arrived, the weather was glorious. It was not too hot. It was a pleasure to sit beside the pool.

adorable

baby/puppy/kitten

The new baby is adorable, I can run away with her.

Sam’s new puppy is adorable. I wish I had a puppy.

wonderful

pool/view

Now, wonderful we’d normally use with a thing.

So the view was wonderful, and the swimming pool in the hotel was wonderful.

It was a 25-meter pool. It was crystal-clear water. It wasn’t too busy. It was really wonderful.

It was great to get away from the city. We had a really wonderful weekend. A second honeymoon.

Again here we can use this both with what (the thing) and who (the person).

So how was the view off the balcony?

sea looking at the wonderful mountains and background really really quite stunning.

And how did she look on her wedding day?

Oh, she was stunning. She had the most beautiful dress really nice cream colour. Really really classic.

Okay. So another word that we can use is

That somebody who is beautiful can be very good-looking.

They can also be

person/house/location

We wouldn’t refer to a view for example as good-looking.

We refer to a person as good-looking.

Yes, we could also refer to

  • an attractive woman
