Here I try to help you to understand the English language in a better way so that you can speak and write in English with confidence.

We look at idiomatic expressions, phrasal verbs, advanced vocabulary words, all aspects of grammar and pronunciation.

So what are we going to look at? The clue is in the word ‘look’. So we’re going to learn different ways of looking in English.

Intermediate to Advanced English Marathon

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

INSANITY: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Let’s start:

to glance

Meaning:  to look at something quickly

Examples:

👱‍♂️ Did you get a chance to look at those documents that I left on your desk?

👩‍🦰 Ah, I glanced at them quickly but I didn’t see anything that was of interest.

Just glance at the menu. Pick something that you want and let’s order.

to notice

Meaning:  to detect; to become aware of something

Examples:

I was walking down the street and noticed that there was a car parked outside my house.

I noticed that my wife was texting someone.

to observe

Meaning:  to look at something a little bit more intently; to notice a lot of details

Examples:

Please observe the rules of the road.

The police observed one of the suspects leaving a house on Green Road.

to peer (at something)

Meaning: to squint your eyes together and look at something with concentration

Example:

The kids were peering through the gap in the hedge, curious to see what we were doing.

to recognise

Meaning: to identify someone or something because you have seen it before

Example:

I think I recognise this car. It looks like Mike’s car.

I recognise the signs, somebody has had an argument with somebody.

to stare

Meaning: to look intently at something or someone, usually without your eyes blinking at all

Example:

👱‍♂️ What are you staring at?

👩🏽‍🦱 Ah, that guy over there, he just put that packet into his pocket and he hasn’t paid for it.

to gawk

Meaning:  (very informal, slang) to stare at something in a rude way

Example:

She hated the way they were gawking at her.

to examine

Meaning:  to look at something in a lot of detail; to check something; to go through things in a lot of detail

Example:

Please examine the documents carefully before you sign them.

Please examine your change before you leave the shop.

to catch someone’s eye

Meaning:  to attract someone’s attention

Example:

It just caught my eye when I was in the shop. I thought it would look nice on the table there.

to catch a glimpse of

Meaning:  to get a quick look at something or somebody; to see something for a very short time

Examples:

Oh, I didn’t see anything, I only caught a glimpse of them as they were passing by.

I was busy so I just caught a quick glimpse of them when they were leaving the office.
