Hi there, welcome back to Harry and English in a minute.

As you know, there are lots of words and phrases in the English language that can be quite confusing.

So from time to time, I like to explain the differences. Two words I have for you to do today are quite difficult shade and shadow. Let’s find out what is the difference between shade and shadow.

A slightly dark and cool area is created by blocking the sunlight.

The shade is something that’s long and stretches.

The cool side of the road or the shade around the pool.

We like to sit in the shade when the sun is very hot. 

Shade has also other uses in English.

For example,

throwing shade

means to criticise someone

One of her friends just threw shade at him on social media.

to be shady

which means that they are not being honest and can’t be trusted!

This guy is very shady. He came to fix my scratched windshield and ended up cracking my air vent panel which is going to cost at least 250 to fix.

A dark area or shape made from some physical object. If the object moves, its shadow moves too.

The tree and its shadow.

The building and its shadow.

The person and their shadow.

The sun behind you creates your shadow.

There are shadows from the lights on the streets.

How to use shade and shadow correctly
