So, first of all

adoration

Meaning:  is a deep feeling of strong love, admiration and respect. When we adore some things, we love something a great deal. 

Example:

John adored his wife. He adored everything about her. He was deeply in love with her and followed her with adoration.

Meaning he had utmost (greatest) respect and love for her, complete adoration. 

Often, daughters have complete and utter adoration for their fathers.

We also use ‘adoration’ when we talk about religions. 

People have adoration for their God or their Bible or whatever. 

Their particular religion happens to be lots of adoration, particularly in times like Easter or Ramadan or any other festival people are following. 

amazement

Meaning:  amazement is like a surprise, only at a higher level

We can use ‘amazement’ in both positive and negative ways.

Examples:

He looked on with amazement as the building collapsed following the heavy storms. 

He was full of amazement when he opened the box to reveal the present he had always wanted.

anger

Meaning: that strong feeling of annoyance when we’re annoyed about something

Examples:

He was full of anger when his request for the job was turned down. 

You could see the anger building open him. His face became red and he was almost ready to explode. 

If we’re annoyed or very angry about something, we shouldn’t take that anger out on other people. 

disgust

Meaning: total dislike, a feeling of deep unhappiness or displeasure over something; ‘disgust’ is a negative word. 

Example: 

He was filled with disgust when he saw the antics and the actions of certain people. 

We often use it as an adjective – disgusting.

Example:

The food last night was disgusting.

Meaning the food didn’t taste nice.

I watched the news with a sense of disgust. How can people be so cruel to each other?

Next word 

ecstasy /ˈek.stə.si/

Meaning: a feeling of elevation when somebody is feeling really happy

Example:

Children were full of ecstasy when they came downstairs and saw all the boxes and the beautifully wrapped presents on Christmas morning. 

It has other connotations in relation to drug issues, and we won’t go into those because we don’t want to focus on anything negative. But it does have another meaning.

English vocabulary for emotions

fear

Meaning: an unpleasant feeling when you’re afraid of something and you’re not quite sure what’s going to happen

Example:

Sam had a panic attack and broke out in a cold sweat with fear.

Fear spread across his face when he saw the approaching wolf in the forest.

hate

Meaning: a feeling of strong dislike (opposite of ‘love’)

Examples:

Children hate green vegetables.

I hate when people never talk to you in person. 

homesickness

Meaning: the feeling that you get when you’re away from home for a long time and you really want to be back home with your family and friends

Example:

He went away to the UK to work for several weeks or months, but within a few days, he was suffering from homesickness. 

joy

Meaning: that emotion when we’re happy

Example:

A feeling of joy spread across his face when his girlfriend accepted his proposal of marriage.  

Looking into your vegetable patch and seeing your first strawberries might give you a feeling of joy.

Meaning: that deep feeling that you have when there is nobody there when you want them

Not to be mistaken for alone.

When we are alone, we spend time on our own because perhaps we want to be so. 

Example:

People who have lost their partners suffer from deep loneliness because they have nobody to share those special moments with.

We can be very, very lonely and have that emotional feeling of loneliness in a big city.

He had a feeling of loneliness as he spent another weekend on his own without any visits from his family. 

Next, 

love

Meaning: a feeling of deep happiness when you enjoy something very much; the warm feeling of affection that you have for somebody

Example:

I love apple pie with ice cream. 

Paul loves his work, and always goes the extra mile to ensure he’s done his best.

outrage 

Meaning: a deep feeling of anger or annoyance

Example:

I had a feeling of outrage when the government decided to change the retirement age.

People are protesting to show their outrage that the government have done nothing about rising inflation.

Anger and outrage would be very similar.

sadness

Meaning: the feeling that you have when you hear bad news

Example:

There was a deep feeling of sadness at the loss of his pet dog. 

We can feel sad just on occasion because we happen to be alone. But that soon passes on the next day, the sun shines and we’re feeling good. 

The feeling of sadness is a little longer, a little deeper.

And then finally, 

surprise

Meaning: the feeling you get when something happens unexpectedly; sometimes good, sometimes bad

Example:

There was something in her voice that he had never heard before. He looked at her with surprise.

I got a surprise on my birthday when the postman delivered a parcel that I hadn’t expected.
