So what do I have for you in this particular podcast episode? Well, here we’re going to look at some idioms and these idioms are again, themed, and they’re about home or homes. Okay, so English idioms about home or homes.

So we start with an easy one, which we often see on somebody’s wall.

Intermediate to Advanced English Marathon

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

INSANITY: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

English Idioms about Home

home sweet home

Meaning: we usually say it to express pleasure or relief upon returning to our home, especially after an extended period away from it

It really means what it says. Yeah, my home is sweet or dear to me, or my home is a place of refuge where I always like to get back to. It’s a place where I hold dear to my heart. So home sweet home.

So after a long time away on business or even after a long holiday, even though you might have enjoyed the holiday, you might say,

I love to be at home. I love to return home, home sweet home. It’s where I’m really most happy and most comfortable.

Okay, so we all have that feeling.

The second idiom, which is very similar to that is

home is where the heart is

Meaning: a place where you really feel at home, wherever you feel most comfortable, spending most of your time and love to be

Of course, you can live anywhere, any place, any time, as they say. But, you know, that could just be a house can be an apartment, a flat, whatever it is. But your home, your real home is where your heart is. Perhaps where your loved ones are, your family reside, where you feel at ease the most and relax the most.

So no matter what you have, what money you have, what assets you have, your home always weigh the heart and doesn’t have to be a huge mansion. It is where you feel most comfortable.

an Englishman’s home is his castle

Meaning: a place where you feel safe and do whatever you want

We hear this a lot. An Englishman’s home is his castle. England is. We’re not literally full of castles, but you’ll find them in every shire, every county, up and down the country from the border of Scotland, down to the coast, off the English Channel. So lots and lots of castles.

But every Englishman likes his home to be like a castle, a place of refuge, a place of shelter, a place where he can shut out the rest of the world. So you get home from work, you open the door, you close the door. Ah, yes, this is my refuge. This is my home. My home is my castle. So it’s quite obvious that the percentage of homeownership in the UK is significantly higher than lots of other European countries where they don’t like to rent. They like to own the homes because of this or this belief that they should have a home, their own little castle.

a home from home

Meaning: a place where you feel comfortable, happy and relaxed, as if in your own home

Example: I enjoy visiting my Auntie Marie, her house is a home from home to me.

Sometimes it’s nice to find a place that reminds you of home. Yeah, so when we say it’s a home from home, perhaps we have found a little cosy hotel or a little bed sit or small apartment where we can spend those long at business trips. But it has a feeling like your own home. So when we say it’s a home from home, even though your many kilometres away from your actual home, this place reminds you of it and you have a nice feeling of warmth and satisfaction, it’s a little bit of a place where you can relax.

English Idioms about Home

make yourself at home

Meaning: be comfortable, treat this place like your own home

Example:

Come in, sit down, take your coat off. Relax. Put your feet up if you wish. I’ll get you tea, so make yourself at home.

Meaning I feel as if this is your home and treated in the exact same way as you would treat your own home so be nice and relaxed. So it’s a way of greeting people on.
