Hi there, welcome back. This is Harry and welcome to another podcast episode where we try to help you to get a better understanding of the English language. To practise and understand English in the best way possible. To improve your conversations. To improve your chances of getting that job with an international company. Look at the grammar, pronunciation, phrasal verbs, whatever it takes.

Well, everybody loves it when we mentioned colocations. So that’s what we’ve got for you. We’ve got some collocations. And in particular, collocations with power, or energy. Power. The power button, whatever it takes. Okay, so I’m going to give them to you, and then we’ll give you some examples.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

INSANITY: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

to have power

Meaning: to have the energy, to have the strength to do something; to be in control

Do you have the power to achieve what you want to achieve?

Who has the power in this family?

Who has the power in this company?

Who has the power in this company? That’s who we need to talk to if we want to make a difference.

to gain/get power

We can get power in many different ways.

We can gain power through an election. So it’s a democratic way of gaining power, you get more votes, you win the election, you’re in charge, you have the power, you get the power.

You gain power through promotion.

He started off in a junior position and worked his way up. Eventually, he got the power through many years of promotion.

to come/to rise to power

Meaning: to have the opportunity to take control

You can come to power slowly.

You can come to power through an election.

You can come to power because you’re put there by military forces.

Or you can rise to power.

Prince Charles, in the UK, is the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth and eventually, he will rise to power.

The leader of the army goes step by step through the ranks and rises to power where he’s in charge.

Of course, if you can’t wait for your turn, then you might

seize power

Meaning: to take power by force, to overthrow

The civilian authorities were thrown out of power. The military seized power and put in charge one of their own colonels.

Or if there’s a takeover of one company by another, and it’s not such a friendly takeover, some members of the board may seize power and vote out the current board or the CEO.

to use/exercise power

Meaning: to make use of the power that you have

I’m going to exercise my power. I’m going to give everybody two extra days holidays at Christmas.

I’m going to exercise my power as the CEO and I’m going to call an emergency meeting of the board to deal with this particular problem.

So when you have particular power, and you know how to use it, then you can exercise that power to get what you want to get.

Or somebody may tell you,

Well, you’re in charge, you’re the boss, why don’t you exercise your power?

pulling power

Meaning: to have some ability, some way in which we can get people to do something that we want them to do

They will always fill a stadium with their fans and people who want to listen to their music. They have the pulling power.

What we need is we need a really, really strong, well-known band to have the pulling power. They have the ability to get people into the concert.

If you’re trying to launch a new product, you really need some strong person and you look for somebody with real pulling power. For example, George Clooney.

consumer power

Meaning: when the consumers dictate what they want; they have the power to influence the purchase

If you get the right product in the right place, then the consumer power will push your product forward and make it very, very successful.

Consumer power will force companies to produce more electric cars in the future. 

immense power

Meaning: great or huge, without limits

Immense is one of those extreme adjectives that we can use. So we can have big we can have huge. We can have enormous.

This car has the highest horsepower, there’s immense power in this engine. It goes from 0 to 100 kilometres in 10 seconds.

This hand drill can drill holes in the wall. There’s immense power. You can feel the vibrations when you switch on the electricity, it’s immense.

to be in power

Meaning: to be in charge

Who is in power at the moment in this particular government?

Who will be in power after the next election? The voters have to decide.

And then finally,

power-hungry

Meaning: to have an appetite for power; to want more power

Hungry is when you have an appetite for something for food, thirst for water. 

Power-hungry leaders. Power-hungry businessmen. Power-hungry agents.

At the start, he was power-hungry and willing to step on anyone’s toes to get the job done.
