So what are we going to talk about today? Well, for all of you and those of you who are living in cities I thought I’d give you some adjectives connected with city life. English adjectives for describing cities. Some of these adjectives are positive and some of them are negative.
Intermediate to Advanced English Marathon
INSANITY: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
rundown
Meaning: a city is perhaps old, in poor condition, where no investment has been made by government or mayors into that particular city
Example:
The city doesn’t really worth a trip. It’s a run-down city where the main street is full of takeaway shops and cheap eateries.
congested
Meaning: a city blocked with traffic
Examples:
The cities with narrow streets that don’t have wide motorways through or around the city, become congested very quickly.
There is a plan for congested cities to ban cars and only allow public transport to go into the city centre.

sprawling
Meaning: a city that spreads far and wide
Examples:
Dublin became a sprawling city due to the city ban on high-rise buildings.
Las Vegas is a huge sprawling city in the middle of a desert.
spotless
Meaning: a city that is very very clean
Examples:
Singapore is a spotless city where you don’t see any of those horrible bubble gum stains on the streets.
I don’t like spotless cities as they look a bit like hospital theatres.

affluent
Meaning: a wealthy city, a city with money
Example:
The centre of the city is affluent and dominated by the multi-storey bank and insurance buildings.
polluted
Meaning: a city with bad air quality, with the smog that is dangerous to health
Examples:
Some people wear masks in polluted cities.
The city became polluted from the rapidly growing industries in and around it.

filthy
Meaning: a city that is really really dirty; with lots of rubbish on the streets
Examples:
The city was filthy, there was a problem with strikes and the garbage piled up on the streets.
The buildings looked filthy, they were black and full of grime because of pollution.
deprived
Meaning: something critical or important is missing from the city; deprived of tourists, or deprived of industry
Example:
The fifth golf course was hardly a priority in a city deprived of decent schools, healthcare, and public transport.

compact
Meaning: a city that is quite tight, where the streets are narrow and it doesn’t spread out so much; it’s very easy to get from one side of the city to the other in a very short space of time
Example:
Dublin could be regarded as a compact city because the city centre is very small and it doesn’t take you hours to get from one side of the city to the other.
flourishing
Meaning: a city that’s doing really really well; a city that is thriving, with lots of new buildings, lots of investment
Example:
Lisbon in Portugal is a flourishing city with lots of stylish restaurants and interesting streets to visit.
So they’re all words or adjectives for describing cities and city life in English.
