In today’s advanced English lesson, we’re looking at the theme of love. This is the month of February and it’s always gifts of chocolates and flowers, and romantic meals for two around St. Valentine’s Day.

Love should be in the air all year round, but they focus particularly in February.

Of course, it’s very commercial, but it’s really a good opportunity to demonstrate to those close to you why you love them and hold them so dearly to your heart.

So we’ve got 14 ways to say I love you in English. Some of these you can use directly with your loved ones, others you’d use in conversations with your friend about other friends who have fallen madly in love with somebody.

I’m mad about you

Meaning: you can’t think of anyone or anything else

Examples:

Sarah is just mad about her new boyfriend and won’t stop talking about him.

I love everything about you

Meaning: the way we feel in the very early days of romance

Example:

I love everything about you. The way you smile, the way you laugh. There’s nothing about you that I don’t like.

fall for somebody

Meaning: be strongly attracted to someone, be smitten by someone

Example:

Have you been talking to Michael recently? He’s fallen for that girl in the computer department.

besotted by someone

Meaning: (used in books) completely infatuated with them; usually means that the love is only in one direction

Example:

She is besotted by him. She is just completely, utterly, totally in love with him.

Meaning:  extreme reaction of pleasure or disgust (could be used in a negative)

Example:

Meaning: used to express strong affection for another person

Example:

Meaning: (British English) love someone very much

Example:

She has 4 dogs at home and she loves them to bits.

Meaning: talking about somebody who is really, really deeply in love

Example:

I haven’t seen Jonathan like this for a long, long time. He’s really got it bad.

Meaning: (informal) to fancy someone, to be attracted to somebody

Example:

He’s got the hots for the girl who’s gone to the other school.

Meaning: feel extremely happy about something

Example:

She’s been walking on air since she met Mark.

Meaning: to be considering trying to start a romantic relationship with someone

Example:

I think she’s got an eye on somebody. She’s been buying a bit of makeup recently. She is also spending a lot of time texting somebody.

win somebody’s heart

Meaning: to get someone to feel the same way about you as you do about them

Example:

Valentine’s Day is an ideal opportunity to win her heart. Just send her an anonymous card with a bit of poetry or a box of chocolates.

be crazy about somebody

Meaning: to be very interested in someone

Example:

Oh, she’s absolutely crazy about him. I wish she just rang him and stopped talking about it all the time.

Meaning: a love-like vibe can be sensed from the people around you

Example:

On Valentine’s Day, love is in the air and you see happy couples all around.
